Swedish groups with affiliates abroad 2023

In 2023 there were 4,424 Swedish controlled enterprise groups with affiliates abroad, an increase of 182 groups since 2022. Of these enterprise groups 1,304 or 31 per cent had subsidiaries in Norway. 20 per cent of the enterprise groups had subsidiaries established in Denmark and 19 per cent in US.

The number of employees in the Swedish controlled enterprise groups with affiliates abroad amounted to over 2.39 million, an increase of 3 per cent over the preceding year. The number of employees abroad increased by 4,8487 to 1,608,245 and the number in Sweden increased by 21,225 to 782,130 employees. That was more employees at Swedish international groups both in Sweden and abroad than had ever before.

The largest increase in individual countries took place in US where the number of employees in the Swedish controlled groups increased by 30,855 and in Great Britain, where the number of employees increased by 9,524. Swedish controlled enterprise groups also decreased their number of employees in a few countries, in Argentina their number of employees decreased by 5,339 and in Poland by 2,344 employees.

The countries where Swedish enterprise groups had their largest number of employees were US with 242,573, Germany with 119,262 and Norway with 92,321 employees.

Just under half of the employees abroad were in a group with at least 5,000 employees in Sweden. The 34 enterprise groups with at least 5,000 employees in Sweden accounted for 46 per cent of all employees in foreign countries, and 41 per cent of employees in Sweden.

The total turnover for the Swedish groups with affiliates abroad accounted to SEK 9,350 billion for year 2023. Abroad the total turnover was SEK 5,808 billion and the total turnover in Sweden was SEK 3,542 billion. That was an increase of 10 per cent abroad and an increase of 2 per cent in Sweden over the preceding year.
